Thanks to an email and Facebook, for the first time, the annual McGill University Health Centre Employees Union (MUHCEU) BBQ will also be held for the weekend and night shift.
Historically, the annual summer festival is held during the day and evening shift, a practice Manuel Fernandes, union VP for Occupational Health and Safety, disagreed with because the union dues which finance the MUHCEU BBQ are collected across all shifts.
After union executives refuse for the third time his request to add weekend and night shift BBQ’s to the schedule, Fernandes, turned to Facebook for support.
Fernandes emailed the executive, requesting BBQ dates for weekend and night shifts, and that Tony owner of the Portuguese rotisserie Ma Poule Moullie, agreed on a set meal price, which respected the budget spent on the daytime and even shift.
He then posted on his Facebook page that an email requesting weekend and night shift BBQ’s was sent that morning to the union executive.
“The executive repeated the same response as in the two previous two years, that something will be arranged for September, and in September there was always another excuse to put it off,” said Fernandes. “Right after the Facebook post, Paul Thomas (union president) called and gave me the green light for the BBQ’s.”
When asked if he was please Fernandes replied, “Its the fair decision, and a good start, but the next step will be to provide it to every member even if they happen to be off or away on the date of the BBQ.”
The MUHCEU continues to hold BBQ’s across all four the shifts, day, evening, night and weekends.
Approved! The BBQ will also be served to the CSN Week-End and Night Shift members. The Lachine Hospital union office requested to make their own arrangements for their members BBQ. Please check individual site postings for exact times.
Hello,
Considering that the next Executive will take place at the end of the summer, this request is being emailed this morning to the Executive.
Personally I believe that our members working the night shift* and on week ends should be entitled to have their ‘BBQ’. Therefore I spoken with a restaurant who provide a meal for our night-shift and weekend members which falls below the budget which was allocated for the day and evening members.
Therefore with your permission to proceed, I would require a volunteer from each site to help arrange with the distribution of the meals. If the permission is given I would be ready to start the ‘BBQ’ rotation this coming week-end.
Note: Christopher Reid the VP of the MGH shared the BBQ with the MGH night-shift members (Since elected Chris has provided the BBQ to the MGH nightshift). Chris, Benjamin and myself finished distributing the meals by 2.00am to members who were appreciate and pleased and so were we. Bravo Chris!
