Two days after SNC-Lavalin declared the drainage problems at the new Montreal Children’s Hospital were “largely under control,” drains backed up in the birthing centre early Friday morning, flooding the clinical area with “diarrhea-like” sewage water.
“The drain has been blocked for the past two days. We tried to unclog it without success and had to turn to a subcontractor for assistance. The subcontractor brought special equipment, but the engine of one of the pumps died because the drain is so blocked.
“The solution,” Paquin added, “is to open the pipes from underneath, where an operating room is located. Therefore, we are working with MUHC staff to determine when will be the best time to perform this work. Note that the operating rooms are located underneath the birthing centre.”
