MUHC urged to rethink head office space

The McGill University Health Centre must “re-evaluate” the millions of dollars it has been spending on rent each year in an office tower downtown,  a government report strongly recommends.
In 2005, under the direction of then-CEO Arthur Porter, the MUHC started renting office space on all floors of the 13-storey building at 2155 Guy St. without going to tender and without obtaining the required government approval, observed the report by Michel Bureau, a special monitor who was appointed by the Quebec Health Department to scrutinize the MUHC’s finances.
Most Montreal hospitals don’t lease administrative space in commercial buildings. The Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal, CHUM plans to open its superhospital next year in eastern downtown and by 2020 will house its administrative offices in the complex.
A 2012 report by another government monitor, Guy Baron, estimated that the MUHC would spend a total of $28.4 million in rent at 2155 Guy over 13 years.
