Malfunctioning equipment, low-slope drain cited as causes of MUHC sewage backups

A drainage pipe that was installed at an angle not steep enough and a malfunctioning piece of equipment are two of the probable causes behind the recurring sewage “floods” at the superhospital of the McGill University Health Centre, a preliminary investigation has found.
But that investigation, which was supposed to be completed Friday, is far from over as design-build contractor SNC-Lavalin must continue next week to probe further to identify other possible causes, a spokesperson for the MUHC told the Montreal Gazette.
According to one of the latest inspection reports, “with the results known to date, which vary from case to case, it is still difficult to see a trend that would explain a common cause or causes amongst all the incidents involving spillovers.”
