MUHC to spend millions of dollars to boost cell phone signal

The MUHC’s building materials block the signal causing spotty reception in many areas.

The installation this summer of two exterior antennas only improved signal strength by about 50 per cent, forcing the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) to an agreement with Telus, which will install equipment and 700 small antennas (DAS), at a cost of millions of dollars.

Required also will be about  30 kilometers of cabling that will link the antennas and equipment in the telecommunication rooms.

The MUHC won’t say exactly how much, but it’s in the millions of dollars.

Richard Fahey, the MUHC’s director of public affairs said,  “That money we will be using is money that was set aside for the construction of the Glen site. We are not taking money away from the clinics to pay for the DAS. It’s still within the project costs.”

Mr. Fahey remarks will  bring to mind of our readers many legitimate questions, for example:

Wasn’t the construction of the Glen Campus a turn-key project?

Why wasn’t the extra money used to help pay for the construction of the parking, this could allow for lower parking fees for the patients, visitors and employees?
