Researchers from McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) have succeeded in identifying how the aspergillosis fungus thwarts the immune system of some patients.
Aspergillosis is a disease that is spread through spores of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus that are present in the air we breathe. It can kill up to 90% of patients with weakened immune systems or who suffer from lung disease.
“This is an important finding, since we did not know until now why A. fumigatus showed so virulent in some patients, and we are now trying to develop drugs that would act against this sugar armor,” added Dr. Donald Sheppard, director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the MUHC.
