Just before Christmas the Quebec Health Department has informed the MUHC that it will provide funding for beds at a rate of occupancy of 85 per cent. However, the MUHC’s average occupancy rate is 91 – 95 per cent, forcing the MUHC to consider a combination of job cuts and bed closures across all the MUHC hospitals.
The cut in funding could translate into a reduction of the beds across all sites from 832 to 707, but one figure that is circulating is 770 — or a cut of about 60 beds.
The MUHC released a statement to the Montreal Gazette saying that “discussions are currently occurring with the government on the actual funding structure, as this is the MUHC’s ‘Year One budget.’
