MUHC proposal to "dismantle" women's health mission blasted by doctors
Founded in 1997-1998, the mission provides comprehensive care in obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic-oncology, reproductive health, maternal-fetal medicine and newborn care.
“Dissolving the WHM and incorporating its components into other missions that do not share our interests and focus would irreparably harm the standard of health care available to women at the MUHC,” adds the letter signed by more than 30 physicians and obtained by the Montreal Gazette.
Ian Popple, a spokesperson for the MUHC, denied on Monday that the mission will close, saying that a commitment was made to keep WHM at a Feb. 2 meeting.
“In the past, we’ve had assurances that didn’t count for much. What we would like for the community to know is that this proposal is even being considered and that it makes no sense at all”, said Dr. Lucy Gilbert, chief of the MUHC’s gynecologic-oncology division.
