The McGill University Health Center’s Lachine campus dialysis unit was inaugurated last Friday. The renovated hemodialysis unit has 15 dialysis chairs cost just under $4 million. The unit is able to handle 90 dialysis patients a week.
Health Minister Barrette, also announced that the Lachine Hospital will not be closed but instead will expanded. The new building will cost between $70 and $80 million, and the money has already been put aside.
The new building will increase the elective surgeries and improve the emergency and ambulatory.
“The new building and new dialysis unit are welcome news. However in the past 10 years there has been an increase of over 50 per cent in patients requiring the use of a hemodialysis units, so it’s disappointing that the total number of chairs across the MUHC sites went down from 49 to 44.” VP MUHCEU-CSN Manuel Fernandes
