MUHC Superhospital fraud trial set for Jan. 8, 2019 — six years after arrests

The set date is more than six years after some of the accused were arrested in what has been described as the “biggest corruption fraud in the history of Canada.”

A Quebec Court judge set Wednesday Jan. 8, 2019, as the start date for the fraud trial of the McGill University Health Centre.
Speculation has it that defense lawyers are expected to invoke the Jordan ruling by the Supreme Court which set strict limits on wait times for criminal trials.
The lawyers will argue that their clients have faced unreasonably lengthy delays, and therefore, the charges against them should be stayed.
The main trial involves Yanaï Elbaz and two former executives of engineering firm SNC-Lavalin, and is scheduled to wrap up on August 30, 2019.
Yohann Elbaz, the brother of Yanaï Elbaz, will be tried separately starting October 01, 2018.
