The foundation of the McGill University Health Centre announced Tuesday it will award a $100,000 annual grant to scientists who have won a competition for the most outstanding “out-of-the-box” research project.

The MUHC competition is believed to be the first of its kind in Canada, said Dr. Donald Vinh, a top scientist at the MUHC’s Research Institute, (RI-MUHC).

The grant is part of an $11-million investment dedicated to cutting-edge research, created by the MUHC Foundation and supported by the Trottier Family Foundation and the R. Howard Webster Foundation.

“Our salaries are paid for by grants and donations,” Ana Beatriz Toledo Dias, a scientist at the RI-MUHC, said. “We work here to help patients with ocular melanoma. We try to prevent their eyes from being removed and to treat their cancer with fewer side effects.”

With more than 400 scientists and 1,100 research trainees, the RI-MUHC is Quebec’s largest hospital-based research institute. It has also partnered with scientists on projects in more than 50 countries.
