Last week a pregnant woman that began experiencing irregular contractions was forced to leave the local hospital at LaMalbaie and drive to Quebec City 140 km away because the obstetrics unit remained temporarily closed due to a staff shortage.
Angelique Lauzier and her partner were 15 minutes from their destination when Lauzier gave birth. Luckily both mother and baby are doing well. nonetheless, the incident has led to changes in Quebec’s health care network policies.
Health Minister Danielle McCann announced that ambulance transportation is now mandatory for pregnant women who are near giving birth.
