Montreal police to receive training in dealing with people suffering from mental health issues

Montreal police (SPVM) will ensure that within the next three years all its patrol officers complete a one-day course that will help them deal with people suffering from mental health issues or are in a moment of crisis.

The announcement made at this Tuesday’s public city security committee hearing didn’t satisfy activists and community workers, who complained that one-day training is not sufficient.

The city of Toronto requires its police officers to complete a three-day course that incorporates, de-escalation, dialogue, and containment.
