Scientists in Israel have unveiled what they say is the worlds first 3-D printed heart using human tissue.
The 2.5-cm heart created at Tel Aviv University is the size of a rabbit’s, and for the first time the engineered heart completely matches the immunological, cellular, biochemical, and anatomical properties of the patient.
“This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart replete with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers,” says Prof. Tal Dvir of Tel Aviv University, who led the research for the study.
According to the researchers, “This is the first step in having the ability to print human organs for transplant, and we hope that in 10 years every hospital will have a printer to make organs.”
To make the heart, they used a small biopsy of fatty tissue taken from a human patient
