Quebec health authorities have confirmed the years 24th case of the measles virus in the province and the eight in Montreal. The infected individual, who was contagious, arrived last week in Montreal on a flight from Las Vegas.
A spokesperson for CIUSSS, the regional health authority in Montreal, informed Global News, that the people at risk were immediately contacted and there is no risk to the general public.
Measles also called rubeola was once quite common, but can now almost always be prevented with a vaccine. While death rates have been falling worldwide the disease still kills more than 100,000 people a year, most under the age of five.
