MUHC – the ‘Eagle’ has landed! In the first experiment of its kind in Canada, according to the MUHC News Room, drones raced a vehicle from Héma-Québec to the Montreal General Hospital (MGH)
Tuesday at noon, in an experiment led by MGH emergency physician Dr. Valérie Homier, drones transported simulated blood products nine separate times to the rooftop of the Montreal General Hospital.
Simultaneously, a batch of simulated blood products was transported from the Héma-Québec distribution centre located in the borough of Saint-Laurent to the Montreal General Hospital by vehicle.
Researchers compared the quickness, efficiency and temperature of the simulated blood . “If drones are deemed an effective means of transport for blood products, lives could potentially be saved,” Dr. Homier told the MUHC News Room.
The same afternoon, a drone delivered an automated external defibrillator (AED) during a simulated cardiac arrest that occurred at the Mount Royal Belvedere. Drones are already being used for medical purposes in Europe and Ontario.
