Quantum Vacation can apply to a full-time employees under certain circumstances, such as long-term salary insurance, but primarily applies to part-time workers.

According to the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), “Quantum represents the maximum number of vacation days the employee is entitled to take, paid and not paid.”

Therefore, your Quantum vacation represents the total annual vacation days your are entitled to take. In contrast, ‘standard’ vacation is paid vacation days which you’ve worked for

Part-time and recall list employees accumulate a percentage of paid vacation time based on the number of hours worked. However, after a full year of service, a part-time employee is entitled to a minimum 4 weeks (20 days) of vacation. Your Quantum vacation is a result of this minimum.

Quebec Labour Standard amendments as of January 01, 2019, grant employees credited with three years of uninterrupted service with the same employer at the end of a reference year ending after January 1, 2019 is entitled to a minimum of three consecutive weeks of vacation, to be taken within 12 months following the end of the reference year.

Reducing the number of unpaid vacation days:

By completing the Unpaid Vacation Waiver Form, employees may reduce the number of unpaid vacation days to a minimum of 10 days, as per Quebec’s An act respecting labour standards (the “Act“).  Forms should be available through your manager, human resources or your local union office.

  1. You must complete the form, indicating how many hours or days you want to reduce.
  2. Once you complete the form, give it or send it to your manager*.
  3. Your manager must sign the form.
  4. Yourself, your manager or the local union office must send the completed and signed form to Payroll. (MUHC Payroll Fax: 514-412-4210)

*Always request a hard copy or email confirmation for any document you submit. The proof should include the date and the name of the individual who received the document.

The FIQ union annual vacation leave is calculated on the following percentages.
