The three-year contract will see teachers working in the highest pay bracket earning $91,116 annually, an increase of $8,531 from the current salary of $82,585.

Members of the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE) union, which represents 49,000 teachers in primary, secondary and professional training schools., voted 88 per cent in favour of the agreement reached with the Quebec government.

According to FAE president Sylvain Mallette, the agreement will see salaries approach the Canadian average, $92,000 and include advances in employment conditions.

The agreement also sees a significant entry-level salary increase of approximately $7,000 for those just entering the profession.

For most countries, Labour Day is synonymous with or linked with International Workers’ Day, which occurs on 1 May. The event is an annual holiday to commemorate the accomplishments of workers. For Canada, Labour Day takes place on the first Monday of September.
